Florida jobs remain some of the weakest in the nation

Sunday, June 19th, 2011

Florida jobs are not on the upswing, according to recent data from Forbes and Manpower.

Forbes released its annual best and worst cities for jobs, and Florida cities rank among the lowest. The western city expects to see its job numbers swing upwards dramatically in the next few months.

In fact, the worst city for finding a job this spring is Bradenton-Sarasota-Venice, Fla.

Jobs in Florida remain hard to pin down for desperate job seekers.

On the whole, though, Florida unemployment has decreased.

Forbes released the list in partnership with Manpower, the employment services firm.

ManpowerGroup has surveyed more than 18,000 employers in 100 metropolitan areas to find out who’s hiring, who’s firing and who plans to maintain their current staff levels in the third quarter of 2011, July through September.

According to the survey and Forbes, 20% anticipate an increase in staffing levels in their second quarter hiring plans, while 8% expect a decrease in payrolls. The difference between those numbers gives you what ManpowerGroup calls a net employment outlook of 12%–or 8% when seasonally adjusted, which is still up from 6% for the same period last year. Sixty-nine percent of employers expect no change in their staffing, and the final 3% of employers are uncertain.

The survey also found that employers in 11 of the 13 industry sectors reported a positive net outlook. Leisure & Hospitality (27%), Mining (25%) and Wholesale & Retail Trade (20%) are the most optimistic, overall.

IT jobs in Florida increase

Sunday, April 10th, 2011

A new report out shows that IT jobs in Florida are on the rise.

According to two just-released surveys by Boca Raton-Information Technology (IT) search and staffing specialist, PROTECH, there is much stronger economic outlook among IT executives and tech talent in the region.

The 9th Annual Tech Leadership survey revealed that IT budgets for 2011 are up by 41% from 2010. 37% of Tech Leaders plan to increase IT staff this year (up by 23% compared to 2010). And 50% of Tech Executives are concerned about losing top IT talent in 2011, the top two key reasons cited are compensation and lack of career path.

The 7th Annual Tech Talent survey shows a marked improvement in perception regarding the job market with 31 percent viewing the job market as “better” compared to 15% last year. 88% of employed IT talent are willing to leave their current employer (up from 81% in 2010). Top three factors when considering a new job include Salary, company stability and benefits.

“When you look at the average pay increase for Tech talent in 2010 of only 2%, you begin to understand why more employees are willing to make a change as they see IT job market conditions improving. We are already seeing higher demand for certain IT skills than supply and multiple job offers,” said Deborah Vazquez, PROTECH CEO.

PROTECH surveyed over 700 IT Director to CIO level executives for its 9th annual Tech Leadership Survey; and over 14,000 IT professionals for its 7th annual Tech Talent survey. All participants are located in Florida’s Broward, Miami-Dade and Palm Beach counties.

“This valuable local market IT data shows us how we are trending as a region. I’m pleased to see IT budgets and job market conditions improving in South Florida,” said Jackie Fernandez, SFTA Executive Director.

Additional survey highlights:

Economic Outlook: The number of Tech Executives who perceive the current health of the overall economy as “Getting Stronger” this year was 53% versus 21% in 2010. (more…)

Florida jobs are heating up the market

Sunday, January 30th, 2011

According to a new survey from Monster.com, Florida jobs are among the best in the nation.

Monster developed the hot markets/hot jobs ranking based on the relative abundance of job openings for the given local workforce– the higher the rank, the more jobs available per person in the market. Accordingly, the following markets are where seekers are best positioned to enter the war for talent and win.

1. Washington, DC

2. San Francisco, CA

3. Boston, MA

4. Baltimore, MD

5. Seattle, WA

6. Minneapolis, MN

7. Cleveland, OH

8. Tampa, FL

9. Dallas, TX

10. Kansas City, MS

“Within the markets we identified as prime spots for seekers, the hottest jobs fell largely within the IT and healthcare industries,” commented Jesse Harriott, Senior Vice President and Chief Knowledge Officer for Monster Worldwide. “This is largely due to the economic recovery where communities across the nation are starting to spend more on things like IT infrastructure and other areas where they’d previously avoided spending on, for as long as possible. Meanwhile, healthcare has long been immune to the economic recession, especially given the skills shortage in that industry due to baby boomers’ retiring, taking those skills with them in the process.”

The highest growth occupations, as substantiated by the most recent Monster Employment Index (MEI), indicates that healthcare support and computer/mathematical occupations are indeed amongst the hottest jobs across the nation. These occupations include:

* Computer and Mathematical (+14% YOY)
o IT Project Managers
o Database Administrators
o Computer SW Engineers
o Computer Support Specialists
o Computer and Information Scientists, Research

Florida Jobs On the Decline

Wednesday, February 10th, 2010

Florida jobs are decreasing, which is reflected in the numbers released Friday by the state labor department. Florida’s unemployment rate was 11.8 percent in December, up 0.3 percentage points from the previous month, and the highest rate since 1975.

The Miami Herald pointed to Chick-Fil-A as an example of how desperate job seekers are becoming. According to the Herald, the new Chick-fil-A restaurant in Miami Lakes opened this week with a crew of carefully selected workers.

“We had about 6,000 applications for 65 jobs,” said Tony Sampayo, the fast-food restaurant’s owner. “It has been great. We ended up with a really good team.”
