One energy supplier is planning to cut some jobs in Florida by the end of the year.
Progressive Energy, an energy company with more than 21,000 megawatts of generation capacity and $9 billion in annual revenue, is slated to cut about 300 Florida jobs by the end of the year.
The Raleigh, North Carolina-based company doesn’t plan to cut any jobs in North or South Carolina, according to an article by Triangle Business Journal. About half of the positions to be cut are currently vacant, while only 151 positions to be cut have been identified so far.
The company plans to make most of the just cuts at its energy delivery sector, which maintains the delivery and transmission of power to homes and businesses. It is expected managers, supervisors, engineers and technical workers all will be affected. The company plans to offer support to those who cannot find another job within the company.
The company is cutting jobs in Florida because of the state’s recent economic downturn, which is causing less customers to use the company’s services. Progress has added only 2,000 new customers since last year, and existing customers are consistently using less energy.
According to the United States Department of Labor Bureau of Labor Statistics, Florida had a total non-farm employment of 7,924,000 people during July 2008, a decrease of 1.2 percent from last year.
During July, the industries that lost jobs include:
- manufacturing by 5.4 percent
- trade, transportation and utilities by .8 percent
- information by 2.4 percent
- financial activities by 1.9 percent
- professional and business services by 1.9 percent
- other services by .9 percent
The industries that added jobs include:
- education and health services by 3.3 percent
- leisure and hospitality by 1.3 percent
- government by 1.2 percent
