Florida Medical Jobs Expanding

Two area hospitals are expanding and helping to create Florida medical jobs.

Halifax Health Medical Center in Daytona Beach and Florida Hospital’s Memorial Medical center in Ormond Beach are already two of the area’s biggest employers, but both are planning expansions that will create several new jobs, according to an article by WFTV. This is another sign that the healthcare industry is continuing to thrive in many places despite the current economic recession.

Florida Hospital’s Memorial Medical center includes 12 stories, 277 beds and all-private rooms on a 135-acre spot. The center, which has been in the making for nine years, will open in July. The new facility will help to create 100 new jobs. The hospital expects to see rapid growth in its emergency department and surgical suites.

“In order to actually grow more as a facility, in order to add new technologies, we were not able to do that in our current space so that’s the main reason we decided to build a new facility,” Darlinda Copeland, with Florida Hospital, said in the article. “So as you can imagine we’ve hired a lot of extra help in environmental services, dietary, engineering, all of those areas.”

Halifax Health Medical Center is opening a new north tower next week. The tower includes 10 stories, 180 rooms and the biggest emergency department in the state. The hospital spent more than $200 million for this expansion. The number of jobs to be created here is unknown, as the hospital says staffing is dependent on patients and area population.

Florida’s education and health services industry employed 1,059,200 workers during April, according to the United States Department of Labor Bureau of Labor Statistics. This is down from 1,063,100 workers during March, but a 1.6 percent increase from last year.
