Florida Manufacturing Jobs Lost

A large number of Florida manufacturing jobs have been lost during the past year.

According to the 2009 Florida Manufacturers Register, industrial employment in Florida has decreased by 5.3 percent during the past year. The report, published yearly by Manufacturers’ News, Inc., found that Florida lost 30,340 industrial jobs and 665 manufacturers between February 2008 and February 2009.

Florida is currently home to 15,860 manufacturers that employ 543,283 workers.

“As with the entire nation, weakening demand continues to hit many of Florida’s core sectors, while the faltering housing market has affected industries such as wood products, furniture and building products,” President Tom Dubin said in a press release.

The lumber and wood sector saw the biggest decrease in employment, down 15 percent. This is partly because of lumber mill West Fraser closing and layoffs at Wayne Dalton. However, the start-up of Green Core Earth Products, a manufacturer of energy-efficient modular housing, leaves some hope for the sector.

Florida’s printing and publishing sector had the best industrial employment with 57,581 jobs, although that’s still a decrease of 6.4 percent from the previous year. That’s followed by the electronics sector, which employed 53,826 workers, down 3.3 percent. This is partly because of Hi-Stat Mfg. Co. closing. The fabricated metal products sector employed 50,522 workers, a decrease of 5 percent.

Other sectors that saw a decrease in jobs included: rubber and plastics by 10 percent; stone, clay and glass by 9.7 percent; textiles and apparel by 7 percent; industrial machinery and equipment by 5.2 percent; chemicals by 4 percent; food products by 3.5 percent; paper by 3.4 percent and transportation equipment by 2.3 percent.
