Florida Jobs Program to Help Economy

A new pilot program is helping to create Florida jobs. To find out more about Florida jobs, visit http://www.floridianjobs.com.

The Southwest Florida Jobs program, which was created in conjunction with the Suncoast and Southwest Florida work force boards, will work to leverage resources and programs of local economic and workforce organizations to provide tools to facilitate economic recovery and business expansion.

Several economic development agencies in the seven-county area have been selected to participate in the program, which is aimed at job training and high-wage job creation in targeted industries.

Workforce Florida Inc. is providing funding for the program. According to an article by the Sarasota Herald-Tribune, the Economic Development Corporation of Sarasota County and the Manatee Economic Development Council will visit the businesses in the area to talk about training grants, programs and other resources as part of the program.

“The more tools and resources we can help our existing businesses access, the better chance we have of making a positive impact on our local economy and hopefully, in the process, see some new jobs being created,” Manatee EDC Director Eric Basinger said.

If the program is successful, it may helpĀ  boos Florida’s lagging economy. During May, the state saw its unemployment rate increase from 9.7 percent to 10.2 percent, which was higher than the national unemployment rate at the time of 9.4 percent.

Florida had a total non-farm employment of 7,389,100 workers during May, according to the United States Department of Labor Bureau of Labor Statistics. This is down from 7,450,100 workers during April and a 5.3 percent decrease from last year.
