Florida Jobs Continue to Decline

The state’s economy continues to dwindle as the unemployment rate increases to more than 10 percent and more jobs in Florida are lost.

During May, Florida’s unemployment rate increased from 9.7 percent to 10.2 percent, which is higher than the national unemployment rate of 9.4 percent. This is a departure from April, when the state’s unemployment rate actually decreased from 9.8 percent to 9.7 percent.

The state had a total non-farm employment of 7,389,100 workers during May, according to the United States Department of Labor Bureau of Labor Statistics. This is down from 7,450,100 workers during April and a 5.3 percent decrease from last year.

Every industry lost jobs from April to May: manufacturing lost 4,100 jobs; trade, transportation and utilities lost 8,000 jobs; information lost 1,900 jobs; financial activities lost 3,200 jobs; professional and business services lost 11,900 jobs; education and health services lost 10,600 jobs; leisure and hospitality lost 17,400 jobs; other services lost 3,000 jobs and government lost 5,200 jobs.

Industries that saw a decrease in jobs when compared to last year include:

  • manufacturing by 10.7 percent
  • trade, transportation and utilities by 5.2 percent
  • information by 6.7 percent
  • financial activities by 4.5 percent
  • professional and business services by 8 percent
  • leisure and hospitality by 5.8 percent
  • other services by 4.4 percent
  • government by 1.1 percent

Only one industry saw an increase in jobs when compared to last year. The education and health services industry employed 1,048,600 workers during May, down from 1,059,200 workers during April, but a .5 percent increase from last year.
