Florida Construction Jobs Created by Beltway

A project involving creation of the First Coast Outer Beltway could help create tens of thousands of Florida construction jobs.

Gov. Charlie Crist recently signed legislation that will allow Florida Department of Transportation officials to move forward with the project. However, it’s thought that the project could still be years from starting, according to an article by Jacksonville.com. Once started, the project is estimated to create 30,000 jobs.

The DOT delayed the project last year because it was unsure whether or not the stat would charge property taxes on the land. Because the state doesn’t have money to build the road, it wants to hire a private contractor to build and maintain it. Costs would be recovered by charging tolls.

The legislation signed by Crist would exempt a private company from paying property taxes. But now the State of Florida will have restart the procurement process leading to hiring a private partner, which could take at least a year.

The 46.5 mile toll would connect Interstate 95 in St. Johns County and Interstate 10 in Duval County. It would be the area’s first toll road in 20 years.

Although it may take time, the tens of thousands of construction jobs could help recover Jacksonville’s failing construction industry. The city’s construction industry employed 36,000 workers during April, according to the United States Department of Labor Bureau of Labor Statistics. This is down from 36,300 workers during March and a 17.4 percent decrease from last year.

As a whole, Jacksonville had a total non-farm employment of 603,400 workers during April, down from 604,400 workers during March and a 4.1 percent decrease from last year.

  4. When there isn’t any dollars being used, there is not any money in the construction business to create things. The recession operates bottom upward while workers are laid off just before businesses fail. This means a high quantity of discharged competent laborers as well as less men and women paying out interest to the benefits system which means those who continue to be employed bear a larger burden as compared to before.
