Industrial Jobs in Florida Down

Industrial jobs in Florida fell 7 percent between February 2009 and February 2010, according to the 2010 Florida Manufacturers Register, an industrial directory published annually by Manufacturers’ News.

According South Florida Business Journal, in those 12 months, Florida lost 38,278 industrial jobs and 932 manufacturers. The Sunshine State is now home to 14,928 manufacturers employing 505,005 workers.

Florida construction jobs are also down.

“It’s a perfect storm of negative conditions,” said Tom Dubin, president of the Evanston, Ill.-based publishing company. “The country has suffered deep losses in manufacturing employment due to automation and technology, outsourcing and the recession, while the faltering housing market has affected industries such as wood products, furniture and building products.

Thousands of People Apply for Construction Jobs in Florida

Almost 5,000 people showed up to a Tampa Bay job fair, resumes in hand, to apply for construction jobs in Florida.

According to WTSP.com, the emotions of the job seekers ranged from hopeful to desperate.

“Desperate… I am. I really want a job. It’s hard. We’re behind on everything,” says Georgia Smith of Hudson, who says she and her fiancé can do tile work.

ZMG Construction is looking for all sorts of workers to help redevelop a 12 block area near downtown. The public/private project is called Encore. It will include commercial space, market-rate and low-income housing.

Florida Unemployment Rate Burgeons

Florida labor officials reported a January Florida unemployment rate of 11.9 percent, matching the highest on record since the state began counting the jobless a generation ago.

According to the Miami Herald, Florida’s jobless rate in January 2010 was 2.2 percentage points above the national average of 9.7 percent, the Agency for Workforce Innovation said.

Unemployment figures for January rose one-fifth of a percentage point from Florida’s revised December rate of 11.7 percent. The 11.9 percent equals the record high established in May 1975 when Gerald Ford was president and Reubin Askew was governor of Florida.

And while there are now 1.1 million Floridians out of work, the worst may not be over.

Legoland Creates Florida Jobs

Legoland Florida, an amusement park coined after the toys, is slated to open in Winter Haven in 2011 and is expected to create hundreds of Florida jobs (click here).

The theme park has opened a Web site to list job opportunities and provide other information at legoland floridaresort.com.

Florida Hospitality Jobs for Haitian Immigrants

The Florida Educational Institute will commit $3.7 million in scholarhip money to fund career training for Haitian immigrants, many of which are working Florida hospitality jobs.

The funds are meant to assist the Haitian relief effort stemming from the disastrous earthquake last month.

There are 398 Haitian immigrants in Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach, Florida, who have been granted Temporary Protected Status (TPS) by President Barack Obama.

Florida Jobs On the Decline

Florida jobs are decreasing, which is reflected in the numbers released Friday by the state labor department. Florida’s unemployment rate was 11.8 percent in December, up 0.3 percentage points from the previous month, and the highest rate since 1975.

The Miami Herald pointed to Chick-Fil-A as an example of how desperate job seekers are becoming. According to the Herald, the new Chick-fil-A restaurant in Miami Lakes opened this week with a crew of carefully selected workers.

“We had about 6,000 applications for 65 jobs,” said Tony Sampayo, the fast-food restaurant’s owner. “It has been great. We ended up with a really good team.”

Florida Jobs Online Increase

Those looking for Florida jobs (Click here) last month probably had more luck if they were using online resources.

The Conference Board recently reported that Florida was one of several states to see strong gains in online job demand during August. Demand in the state increased from 15,700 to 181,400 jobs online. That follows a 4,400 decrease during July.

Throughout the country, online advertised vacancies increased by 169,000 during August. Demand has increased by 300,000 since April.

Florida Aerospace Jobs in Danger

Several Florida aerospace jobs could soon be lost.

According to an article by the Orlando Sentinel, Central Florida’s space industry could lose more than 7,000 jobs during the next few years as NASA retires its space shuttle program. On top of that, Northrop Grumman Corp. recently announced that it will eventually layoff workers in the area.

The company announced it plans to eliminate 70 jobs, or about 6 percent of its workforce. Northrup Grumman previously employed about 1,200 workers in its airborne defense electronics and other combat systems divisions.

Florida Job Search Tough Amid Recession

If you’re looking to find a job in Florida, a new report might be discouraging.

A recent analysis from Bizjournals ranked Florida as the third-worst state when it comes to weathering the recession. The survey looked at the recent economic records of all 50 states and the District of Columbia. Each state’s results were compared to corresponding national averages in six categories.

Florida’s unemployment rank came in at 10.6 percent, non-farm employment grown is down 5.1 percent from last year, personal income growth declined by 1.2 percent from last year, wage growth is down 2.7 percent from last year, home value growth declined by 22.5 percent from last year and construction employment growth dropped by 15.6 percent from last year.
