Florida Unemployment Increases

Wednesday, August 25th, 2010

Job market news has been a mixed bag for many states, but in Florida the news was dismal as the state braced to hear that Florida unemployment had increased.

Florida is still recovering from the housing meltdown and remains one of the nation’s weakest job markets. Unemployment remained well above the national rate of 9.5 percent. And the state had the nation’s fifth-worst jobless rate, trailing only Nevada, Michigan, California and Rhode Island.

The rate increased to 11.5% in July, which was unpleasant but not unexpected. That is up from 11.4% from June, accordng to the Agency for Workforce Innovation.

But in Metro Orlanda unemployment rose to 11.5%, which is above the state average.

But in a more optimistic note, hiring picked up statewide. The number of jobs in Florida rose by 2,700 from a year ago. The number of jobs in the state increased 5,700 from June to July.

Martin County unemployment increased to 12.3 percent from 11.7 percent the previous month. St. Lucie County’s jobless rate spiked to 15.2 percent, third-highest among the state’s 67 counties.

In another sign of the job market’s weakness, 49 Florida counties had double-digit unemployment rates in July, up from 46 the previous month.

Among the sectors adding positions: private education and health services (36,700 jobs), government (8,800), professional and business services (8,000) and trade, transportation, and utilities (5,100).

Troubled Jail May Be Hiring for Corrections Officer Jobs in Florida

Tuesday, August 10th, 2010

A Florida jail that has suspended ten Osceola officers may soon be hiring for corrections officer jobs in Florida if the men end up fired.

Apparently the ten men did not tell the truth on their applications. Ten were suspended Wednesday, and three more on Friday.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement has criticized the jail for what it has deemed as ‘weak hiring practices.’

The men were all brought on without an extensive background check, something that one would think would be mandatory when you’re dealing with people protecting or guarding inmates. (more…)

Monday, August 2nd, 2010

Inuvo, a leading provider of performance-based online marketing services, has announced they will be setting up shop and adding creating hundreds of telemarketing jobs in Florida.

According to a press release, a leading provider of performance-based online marketing services, Inuvo has selected Orlando, Florida-based Contact Centers of America (CCA) to provide outbound and inbound call center support for BabytoBee.com at its Clearwater headquarters.

“For the past two years we have been using offshore services to support BabytoBee’s online lead generation efforts,” said Carrie Maurer, senior vice president, Inuvo’s Direct to Consumer businesses. “As we work to expand many aspects of our service, we were looking to upgrade our call center support and loved the idea of bringing jobs back to the United States, specifically to Clearwater.”

Through a team of more than 200 call center representatives situated in Inuvo’s Clearwater headquarters’ location, CCA will provide outbound and inbound lead nurturing and qualification services to nearly one million BabytoBee pre- and post-natal customers each year. This upgrade to BabytoBee’s call center services is the first of many improvements Inuvo is making to its BabytoBee offering. In September Inuvo will launch a fully revamped, content- and feature-rich website for BabytoBee.

“We wanted a world-class partner who would tightly integrate with our online lead capturing system, had the experience to support our growing BabytoBee business and was willing to utilize the space available in our Clearwater headquarters. CCA is that solution,” said Maurer. “By working with CCA, Inuvo expects to increase revenue and decrease the cost per lead while enhancing the customer’s experience. Inuvo has a valuable asset in the BabytoBee business. I’m hard pressed to come up with a baby products manufacturer who wouldn’t be interested in these qualified leads. CCA is going to help us increase the value of those leads.”

“Through our partnership, we are creating new jobs right here in our home state of Florida, supporting both companies’ desire to create regional jobs in the high technology industry,” said Joe Jacoboni, CCA CEO. “In this role, we look forward to supporting Inuvo’s standard of excellence in customer service, and helping to drive incremental revenue. The BabytoBee offering requires call center representatives with the compassion and astute phone skills to not only qualify a lead, but also nurture a customer during one of the most exciting and impactful moments of their lives–pregnancy. Our ability to screen, hire and train a top-notch group of representatives with this unique skill set has truly set us apart.”
