Boeing Contract To Bring Florida Engineering Jobs

Boeing is promising to bring nearly two thousand jobs to Florida if it wins a military contract to build a new fleet of aerial refueling tankers, a contract that would add hundreds of Florida engineering jobs.

The company is releasing new information about the project’s potential economic impact. The contract would help Florida’s burgeoning unemployment rate.

Boeing spokesman Bill Barksdale says the contract could provide a major boost for the company’s Florida contractors.

“We are projecting 19 hundred total jobs in the state of Florida and the annual estimated economic impact, if we would be selected for this contract, would be about 95 million dollars.”

Thousands of People Apply for Construction Jobs in Florida

Almost 5,000 people showed up to a Tampa Bay job fair, resumes in hand, to apply for construction jobs in Florida.

According to WTSP.com, the emotions of the job seekers ranged from hopeful to desperate.

“Desperate… I am. I really want a job. It’s hard. We’re behind on everything,” says Georgia Smith of Hudson, who says she and her fiancé can do tile work.

ZMG Construction is looking for all sorts of workers to help redevelop a 12 block area near downtown. The public/private project is called Encore. It will include commercial space, market-rate and low-income housing.

Florida Unemployment Rate Burgeons

Florida labor officials reported a January Florida unemployment rate of 11.9 percent, matching the highest on record since the state began counting the jobless a generation ago.

According to the Miami Herald, Florida’s jobless rate in January 2010 was 2.2 percentage points above the national average of 9.7 percent, the Agency for Workforce Innovation said.

Unemployment figures for January rose one-fifth of a percentage point from Florida’s revised December rate of 11.7 percent. The 11.9 percent equals the record high established in May 1975 when Gerald Ford was president and Reubin Askew was governor of Florida.

And while there are now 1.1 million Floridians out of work, the worst may not be over.

Legoland Creates Florida Jobs

Legoland Florida, an amusement park coined after the toys, is slated to open in Winter Haven in 2011 and is expected to create hundreds of Florida jobs (click here).

The theme park has opened a Web site to list job opportunities and provide other information at legoland floridaresort.com.
