Florida Biotech Jobs Important to Economy

Florida biotech jobs have become a focus among state leaders.

Gov. Charlie Crist has noted Florida’s innovative biotechnology and life sciences industry in his ongoing effort to focus on economic development. He most recently highlighted the importance of training Florida’s future workforce and industry growth during a roundtable discussion at the BioScience Technology Complex at Palm Beach Community College.

“Florida’s economy continues to benefit from the state’s development as a global leader in biotechnology and life sciences,” Crist said. “The advances from this industry will continue to diversify Florida’s economy, as well as improve the health and quality of life for everyone.”

Florida Teaching Jobs Event Goes Virtual

A statewide recruitment event for Florida teaching jobs will be held online this year.

The Great Florida Teach-In will be conducted this Wednesday via the Internet. Although the event is usually held in a large conference center, allowing teachers to be interviewed for vacancies on the spot, increasing costs and fewer vacancies has forced the event to go virtual.

Through the Web, teaching candidates and employers will be able to conduct real-time interviews by communicating via instant messaging, telephone and e-mail. Job seekers will be able to upload resumes, transcripts and teaching certificates, as well as download employer information. During its first 24 years, the even brought in about 2,000 job applicants.

Florida Jobs Program to Help Economy

A new pilot program is helping to create Florida jobs. To find out more about Florida jobs, visit http://www.floridianjobs.com.

The Southwest Florida Jobs program, which was created in conjunction with the Suncoast and Southwest Florida work force boards, will work to leverage resources and programs of local economic and workforce organizations to provide tools to facilitate economic recovery and business expansion.

Several economic development agencies in the seven-county area have been selected to participate in the program, which is aimed at job training and high-wage job creation in targeted industries.

Florida Environmental Jobs Created by ARRA

The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act is helping to support many Florida environmental jobs.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration received $167 million in federal economic stimulus money. The State of Florida will see a portion of that, which will be used for ecological projects, including 12,000 corals to be grown to expand reef populations in degraded areas. The projects, which will be overseen by the Nature Conservancy, will create 57 jobs.

Part of the funding will be used to help coral reefs along Florida’s southern coast and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Specifically, $3.3 million will help expand four existing nurseries of staghorn and elkhorn coral and establish two new coral nurseries, according to an article by the Miami Herald.

Florida Jobs Continue to Decline

The state’s economy continues to dwindle as the unemployment rate increases to more than 10 percent and more jobs in Florida are lost.

During May, Florida’s unemployment rate increased from 9.7 percent to 10.2 percent, which is higher than the national unemployment rate of 9.4 percent. This is a departure from April, when the state’s unemployment rate actually decreased from 9.8 percent to 9.7 percent.

The state had a total non-farm employment of 7,389,100 workers during May, according to the United States Department of Labor Bureau of Labor Statistics. This is down from 7,450,100 workers during April and a 5.3 percent decrease from last year.
