Jobs in Florida Created by Bills

A group of new bills aims at helping create more jobs in Florida, among other things.

Gov. Charlie Crist recently signed four economic-development bills that will help create jobs, encourage economic growth and improve the standard of living for Florida residents.

“Today, we are helping reignite Florida’s economy through legislation that empowers businesses and creates new opportunities for families to be successful in their communities and their careers,” Crist said in a press release. “I congratulate all the members of the Florida Legislature on their bipartisan efforts to approve these bills that will benefit Floridians during these challenging economic times.”

Orlando City Jobs Cut

Hundreds of Orlando city jobs will soon be lost.

The City of Orlando recently announced its plan to cut 342 jobs, or about 10 percent of its total workforce. The cuts will result in up to $34 million in cost savings. Included in the cuts will be more than 46 firefighters and 15 police officers. The cuts are expected to take place October 2, according to an article by the Orlando Business Journal.

The cuts will be reached by eliminating 222 filled positions and 120 vacant positions, as well as freezing salaries of all appointed officials, reducing funding for community groups by 12 percent and cutting department budgets by 12 percent.

Florida Manufacturing Jobs Created by Guardian

Several new Florida manufacturing jobs will soon be created as one company focuses on green technology and doubling its physical footprint.

The Economic Development Commission of Florida’s Space Coast recently announced that Guardian Manufacturing Inc. will add up to 40 new jobs during the next two years. Guardian currently employs 60 workers at its 25,000-square-foot facility in Cocoa, and some existing workers have been relocated to a new facility.

The company plans to hire at least 10 people this year to help staff a new 24,000-square-foot facility worth $1.8 million. Many of these jobs will have an average annual salary of $55,000 and include positions for engineers, fabricators and technicians.

Florida Banking Jobs Cut with Wells Fargo

Several Florida banking jobs will soon be lost as one large company cuts positions.

Wells Fargo & Co. recently announced its plan to eliminate about 100 positions at its Northeast Florida mortgage operations, formerly of Wachovia Corp. According to an article by the San Francisco Business Times, the jobs to be cut are in a division that handled Wachovia’s pick-a-pay and option adjustable-rate mortgages, which the bank no longer writes.

The 100 jobs represent almost the entire department, which will be consolidated into Wells Fargo’s mortgage-refinance operations in San Antonio. The job reductions are part of the company’s overall efficiency planning and modeling related to the integration.
